Do Facebook Ads work?

Yes they absolutely work. But you have to make sure you have the right goal for your ads and that you are measuring the right things.


Facebook has some of the most highly targeted, lowest cost per click advertising available on the internet today.


Most people assume boosting a post is an advertisement. Though it technically is, the key differentiator in a successful campaign is understanding that a boost is only one objective.

How do Facebook Ads work?

Many confuse Facebook advertising with organic social media or posting to your page. There is a substantial difference.


Facebook advertising is pay-to-play, and so you are bidding with advertising dollars to compete in Facebook's auction.


Facebook continues to evaluate the parameters in which you bid, but think of your campaign as if you were trying to attend a silent auction, and bidding more on a higher value item such as a car, and bidding less on a lower end item such as a vase.


Based on the ROI, or return on investment you'd like to see, you bid money to sell your items at the RIGHT auction. For instance, you wouldn't want to attend a car auction if you were aspiring to purchase collector's art.


With Facebook's targeting, you are able to bid for the opportunity to reach your ideal customers. The more you bid, the better the chance you'll reach them if you have an offer they like.

Are Facebook Ads better than Google Ads?

Facebook Ads and Google Ads are fairly different in the way they target people.


Google targets based on what people are typing in the search right that moment (as well as demographics).


Facebook targets based on interests that people have in their profile (Pages people have liked, Interests they may have added, and demographics targeting based on 3rd party data).


Therefore, Google Ads hits prospects in the middle of the marketing funnel, whereas Facebook can engage new audiences at the top of the funnel, in addition to converting and retargeting them at each stage of the funnel.

I boosted a post, does that mean I've run ads?

Technically, yes. But a boost is one of MANY potential objectives to run ads to. When boosting a post, the objective is optimize Facebook to increase engagement in that post.


However, boosting a post does not optimize for reach, new audiences, conversions or sales. Therefore, it is a limited perspective to view the success of your campaigns through.

What type of Facebook Ad should I run?

It depends on your goal. When you choose to create an advertising campaign on the backend of Facebook, you'll see a number of choices.


Initially, we recommend starting with traffic and driving the lowest cost per link click to your website. Engagement has a few different options including page likes, post engagement and event responses. If you are looking to boost post or get more likes, then this is a good choice.


If you have the Facebook Pixel installed and you are ready to track conversions, then you can choose conversions.



What should my budget be?

This question is part of a larger question: How much is your marketing budget?


For testing purposes, we suggest using 10% - 20% of your overall budget for the campaign if possible. Then testing at least two to three different ads and running for $20 to $50 for each ad you are testing.


We do not recommend running a campaign for less than $10 a day and encourage a $30 entry point.


$20 - $30 per day at least to test You can have a larger budget if you want to get higher traction but be aware of how large your audience is since you won't be able to have a large budget with a small target.


Five Day Minimum Ads often improve their results over a few days and you need to let the ad get some traction.


Keep optimizations at default setting Facebook is doing a good job at optimizing the ad so there is no need to set your bid at a specific amount unless you're an expert.

How long should I run my Facebook Ad?

You should run your ads as long as it keep converting or performing at the rate you want. We've had clients we ran the same ad for months and it still continues to perform.


If you see the performance start to get worse over a period of days and don't seem to be bouncing back, then you can switch tactics. Sometimes, a new image or running a new test can help.


There often can be some slight dips on weekends or at other times.

What is a good cost per click?

This will vary by industry. You can check this link for a screenshot of some averages per industry.

How do I measure success?

It depends on your objective. With traffic, your goal is to get visits to your website or page. For conversions, it is to receive both lead information in addition to revenue. For video views, it is having a portion or your video seen.


The most important principle is that each campaign you run on Facebook should be in alignment to your goals.

If I'm already doing other forms of marketing, do I need Facebook advertising?

The answer to this question, like most of the others on the list, is that it depends.


Obviously, if you find all these mediums profitable then do it. There is no reason not to --- it's just more money for your business.


The to remember is that Facebook Ads do well over time. You may be able to get cheaper conversions on Facebook and that's always a good thing.

There are more than two billion people on Facebook. Your audience is almost certainly on the platform. The problem is figuring out how to target them.
